Fish Handling at Les Fortinieres

The carp is most at risk when it leaves the water and the risk is even greater when we pick them up for photo's, we have put the following procedure in place in order to try and minimise the risk of injury and unnecessary stress to the carp. We expect to see all that fish here follow these simple step's ,

Once netted the carp stays in the water until all preparations are made, i.e rings, bracelets & watches removed, camera ready, bucket of water,

Take the unhooking tub with the weigh sling layed in it to were the carp is being retained fill the bucket with lake water and wet the tub & sling,

Take the bail arm of and put the rod out of the way, breakdown the landing net ready to roll the carp in it

Put the tub alongside the carp and lift it into the Tub on to the open weigh sling, remove the hook, treat hook hole if necessary, slide the net away from the head to the tail to avoid lifting any scales, treat any other marks or scratches,
Pour plenty of water over the fish's gills.

Take any photos now
when handling the fish for photo's kneel down next to the tub Never stand up when picking up or holding the carp, if a carp is dropped from height even into the padded tub it could die of internal injuries, make sure you have a firm grip before lifting, it help' keep the fish calm if your hand's are not hot, if they are the carp will start flapping making it harder to hold and stress the fish even more,
Pour plenty of water over the fish's gills again

Zip up the sling & weigh the fish with the tub under the weigh tripod, then put the fish back in the water make sure the fish is ok by holding the weigh sling in the water until the carp starts to try and swim away, at this point release the carp

Never leave the carp unattended when out of the water it only takes a second for them to jump out of the tub

we will gladley go through this proceedure with you as many times as it takes, so please ask us

This procedure when you follow the preparation above will help minimise the time the carp is out of the water , less stress more carp in the net.
